University of Huddersfield

Development Type: Refurbishment / New Build | Size: 160,000 SqFt (4500 Sq m) | Value:£ 14 million

The new Business School forms part of the ongoing development of the University campus involved the refurbishment of the existing Lecture Theatre which is a reinforced concrete structure together with new structures comprising a 3 storey rectangular teaching block combined with a 3 storey curved stepped tiered teaching/amenities block all interlinked and connected to an existing access bridge over the Huddersfield Broad Canal. The new structures were developed adopting steel framed buildings with composite reinforced concrete suspended floors and lightweight roof construction.

A fully glazed quadrangle elevation was developed adopting exposed mansard Glulam frames, stepped to form balcony areas over the landscaped quadrangle area. Due to the nature of the existing ground conditions the substructure comprised piled foundations and ground beams together with a ground bearing ground floor slab.

Mike Hollis and Dave Braybrook were the lead Engineers for the duration of the project responsible for the superstructure, substructure, drainage and infrastructure.
